ACS Commercial Cleaning was engaged to complete a major deep clean of the ProSport Health & Fitness gym located within The Alfred Hospital.

This was not a standard gym clean. The facility carried significant accumulated dust, grime and residue throughout, concentrated in exactly the places routine cleaning cannot reach: around and beneath heavy gym equipment, inside weight stations and machine frames, behind racks, along wall edges and in the corners of the floor.

Reaching it meant physically relocating equipment where that was possible, and working carefully around large fixed machines where it was not.

THE SITUATION

Every gym accumulates build up in the same places, and it happens regardless of how conscientious the routine cleaning is.

Cardio machines, cable stations, pin loaded equipment and squat racks sit in fixed positions, sometimes for years. Routine cleaning wipes the surfaces members touch, because that is what routine cleaning is for and what the schedule allows time for. What it cannot do is get underneath a leg press, behind a cable crossover, inside a machine frame or along the wall edge that a rack has been pushed against.

Over time that produces a facility where every visible surface is clean and a substantial amount of dust, chalk residue, skin cells and general debris sits in the spaces between and beneath the equipment.

For a gym operating inside a hospital, that gap matters more than it would elsewhere. The Alfred is a major hospital campus, and a fitness facility within it serves staff, patients and rehabilitation users in an environment where the surrounding standard of cleanliness is clinical. Accumulated dust around equipment is a presentation problem in a commercial gym. In a hospital facility it is a standards problem.

The facility needed a genuine reset rather than another surface clean.

WHAT ACS NEEDED TO ACHIEVE

Reach and remove the accumulated dust and grime in the areas routine cleaning cannot access.

Move equipment where it could be moved safely, and work methodically around it where it could not.

Clean the equipment itself in detail, including frames, cables and components rather than only the contact surfaces.

Restore floors, walls, glass and high level areas across the full facility.

Deliver a result appropriate to a fitness facility operating within a hospital campus.

ACS'S APPROACH

The team completed a detailed deep clean across the entire gym.

Equipment cleaning in detail. Every machine was cleaned individually rather than wiped as part of a circuit. That meant working into frames, along cables and cable housings, around adjustment mechanisms and pins, and across the components that a routine clean passes over. Equipment safe products were used throughout so that disinfection did not come at the cost of corroded metal, degraded rubber grips or clouded screens.
Underneath and behind. Where equipment could be moved safely, it was moved and the floor beneath it cleaned properly. Where machines were fixed or too heavy to relocate, the team worked around and beneath them to reach the accumulated debris. This is the slowest part of a job like this and the part that determines whether it is genuinely a deep clean or just a longer surface clean.
Weight racks and storage. Racks, storage areas and the spaces behind them were cleared of accumulated dust and debris.
Floors, walls and high level. Heavy dust and debris was removed from flooring and corners, wall surfaces and edges were cleaned, and high level areas were addressed. Floors were then vacuumed thoroughly and mopped across the full facility.
Internal glass and windows. All internal glass and windows were cleaned, which in a gym environment carries fingerprints, sweat marks and dust in roughly equal measure.

The photographs taken during the work show what this level of detail actually involves. The team are not moving along a line of machines wiping visible surfaces. They are underneath equipment, behind frames, into cable housings and along wall edges, in the places that only get attention when a facility is being properly reset.

THE RESULT

The gym was restored to a significantly higher standard across the entire facility.

Equipment, floors, glass, walls and surrounding areas were left clean and presentable, and the accumulated dust and grime in the difficult to access areas was removed rather than worked around.

The before and after comparison is the clearest measure. The difference is not in the surfaces that were already being cleaned. It is in the spaces beneath the leg press, behind the cable stations, inside the machine frames and along the wall edges, where the build up had been quietly compounding.

This project is a clear demonstration of the difference between routine commercial cleaning and the detailed work required when a facility needs a proper reset.

WHAT THIS DEMONSTRATES

Routine cleaning and deep cleaning are different disciplines, and conflating them is how facilities end up in this condition.

A routine gym clean has a fixed time allocation and a scope built around what members touch. That is appropriate and necessary, and ACS delivers it across gyms and fitness facilities throughout Melbourne. But no routine schedule, however well executed, is going to move a cable crossover and clean the floor underneath it.

Periodic deep cleaning exists for exactly that reason. It resets the facility to a standard that routine cleaning can then hold.
